Interview with Juliette Føgra

1. What was the brief or challenge behind your award-winning project, and what key goals guided your approach?

Juliette Føgra: As an owner of Føgra Book Boutique, I’ve collaborated on my third book with Telman Guzhevsky. Meticulously crafted, this book is a guide for the reader interested in self-development as a singer and performer, with simple steps to achieve a better understanding of the singing process.

Telman is an opera singer who has extensively studied vocal arts in several nations, including the UK and Italy. Being one of the last pupils of the legendary Maestro Carlo Bergonzi, he is carrying forward the great traditions of Italian tenor singing.

The human voice is a universal instrument, preceding any musical instrument created by man. It is a nature-given invaluable asset. One should use it wisely, as any instrument it requires knowledge of how to use it most effectively. Like any craft and mastery, singing has its secrets.

2. What sparked the initial idea for the project, and how did that concept evolve into the final design outcome?

Juliette Føgra: The initial idea behind the project was very straightforward: didactic materials can be dry and technical, whereas practical knowledge with an atmosphere is more attractive and inspiring for the reader.

3. Can you describe your design process for this project, from early exploration to final execution?

Juliette Føgra: Initially, the writer and I concurred on crafting this guide’s design and illustrations in a Renaissance style to portray the origins of those secrets. The illustrations are complex photomontages that have been digitally painted in their final phases.

4. What were the main challenges you faced during development, and how did you resolve them while maintaining clarity, usability, or visual strength?

Juliette Føgra: The only challenge I faced was producing a book that is not commercially available, despite its exceptional quality, and ensuring that the design and illustrations firmly reflect that distinction.

5. What do you consider the most distinctive or successful aspect of the project, and why?

Juliette Føgra: The book’s greatest distinguishing aspect is the execution of its illustrations and the simplicity of its design, which is both clever and minimalistic, rendering it pretty close to one-of-a-kind in terms of appearance and content.

6. If you had to explain this project to someone outside the design industry, what would you say is its true value or impact?

Juliette Føgra: The human voice is a universal instrument, preceding any musical instrument created by man. It is a nature-given invaluable asset. One should use it wisely, as any instrument it requires knowledge of how to use it most effectively. Like any craft and mastery, singing has its secrets. Herein is a guide for it.

7. Looking back, what is one decision you made during this project that significantly shaped the final result?

Juliette Føgra: I tend to choose projects from unmarked territories, ones that I believe I am technically incapable of achieving, ones that scare me most. I began my research from the Italian antique Grand Opera Librettos. And soon enough I knew how to find my way in.

8. What does receiving a Design MasterPrize mean to you, and how do you see it influencing your future work or direction?

Juliette Føgra: Recognition is an invaluable and priceless treasure for any artist. For me, it is an indication that it is visually relatable and a silent pat on my back. I’m grateful. My goal is being the master of my craft and to develop as a more well-rounded individual as a consequence.
